Sesame Street Characters

Sesame Street Soft Toys LogoOne of the longest running children’s television programmes, Sesame Street is an American-based educational show. Based on Sesame Street in New York, it was first screened on 10th November 1969.

The original aim of the show was to use the media to prepare children, especially those from low-income families, for school. By using engaging storylines and Jim Henson’s popular Muppet characters, Sesame Street quickly became a world-wide hit.

Today, Sesame Street is one of the most highly regarded and watched children’s TV show in the world. Many of its characters are instantly recognisable and have been made into soft toys by Gund.

If there is anyone who is not familiar with the most popular Sesame Street characters, we’ve put together a biography of some of our favourites:

Big Bird

Sesame Street Big Bird ToyBig Bird is one of the main Muppet characters. He’s an 8’2” yellow bird who lives in a large nest behind the 123 Sesame Street brownstone.

Possibly a giant canary, Big Bird thinks of himself as more of a condor (according to one episode of Sesame Street).

Sesame Street Elmo ToyA furry red monster, with large white eyes and orange nose, Elmo has his own ‘Elmo’s World’ feature on the Sesame Street TV show.

Aged 3½ years old, Elmo has been the star of feature length films and appeared as a guest on numerous American chat shows.

The Cookie Monster

Sesame Street Cookie Monster ToyThis cookie-loving character has blue fur and googly white eyes and is loved by children and adults alike.

While he famously claims ‘Me eat cookie!’, in 2006 the character was shown to have healthy eating habits, in response to concerns over childhood obesity. However he’ll always be best known for gobbling down cookies.

Count Von Count

Sesame Street Count von Count ToyCount Von Count, often known as The Count, has a love of all things mathematical – especially counting!

A vampire, based on Count Dracula, The Count lives in a cobweb covered castle that he shares with his bats – which he also loves to count!

Sesame Street Grover ToyThe over-enthusiastic and often less-than-successful efforts of this dark blue scruffy monster to help out are an endless source of fun for Sesame Street viewers.

Bert and Ernie

Sesame Street Bert and Ernie ToysThis comic duo are roommates on Sesame Street and are strangely reminiscent of old American TV duos like Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello.

Yellow, banana-shaped Bert is a boring but intelligent character, while the orange round-faced Ernie is more of a dreamer.
